Ranbir Says There Is Only One Flop That ‘Hurt Him’ & It’s Not ‘Bombay Velvet’ Or ‘Shamshera’

After Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor Khan & Priyanka Chopra Jonas, it was Ranbir Kapoor who attended the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During a session, Ranbir talked about his box office flops and stated that there is only one film’s failure in his 15-year-long career that really hurt him and it isn’t his biggest bomb Bombay Velvet or this year’s disaster Shamshera but his 2017 Disney-Esque musical fantasy Jagga Jasoos. Talking about it, Ranbir called the film a “disaster” and told Deadline, “It’s a film that I produced. It was a passion project. It was directed by Anurag Basu. It was a very heartwarming and sweet idea, but it didn’t do well, which really hurt. That’s the only film in my career that hurt me.”

He also talked about the massive failure of the “hardest film” of his career, Shamshera, and the biggest mistake he made in that film. He said, “By far the hardest film I’ve worked on. It was a big box office disaster, but the biggest mistake I made on Shamshera was that I stuck on a beard,” leaving the audience in splits. He then explained, “When you’re shooting in the heat, and you stick on a beard, it’s like your face is melting.” Ranbir also talked about the failure of Bollywood films, in general, and the massive success of South Indian cinema like RRR. He said, “They’re doing really good storytelling. It’s not taking itself too seriously. It’s got all the songs, dances, action, friendship, and comedy. So it’s a multi-genre film, but those are hard films to make because we try to make them, and they keep failing. So we’re really proud that a film like RRR is making an impact in Hollywood.”

Ranbir’s last film Brahmastra made over Rs 400 crore at the worldwide box office. He will next be seen in Luv Ranjan’s romantic comedy opposite Shraddha Kapoor and a gangster action drama Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
