Only Two Seasons of ‘Law & Order’ Dropped on Netflix Today—But More Are Coming

Dick Wolf’s flagship procedural has officially made its way to Netflix, though the initial drop is a bit smaller than expected—but don’t worry, a massive batch of classic episodes is just around the corner.
In a last-minute surprise addition to the April release roster, Netflix struck a deal with NBCUniversal to bring the original Law & Order series to the streaming platform for the very first time in well over a decade.
As of today, April 20th, Seasons 21 and 22 of the iconic courtroom and police drama are available to stream. International subscribers will have to sit this one out, however, as this licensed pickup is strictly for Netflix US for the moment, although you did get SVU a couple of years back.
For years, its immensely popular spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU), was a major, heavily-binged staple of the Netflix US library. However, SVU was eventually pulled from the service entirely as NBCUniversal began clawing back its properties to bolster Peacock.

A TV Institution: The Legacy of Law & Order
For the uninitiated—or those who just need a refresher—Law & Order isn’t just a television show; it’s the blueprint for the modern procedural. Premiering in 1990, the series ran for a staggering 20 consecutive seasons during its original classic run, entirely reshaping the television landscape and launching Dick Wolf’s sprawling procedural empire before returning for its recent revival eras (which make up today’s initial Netflix drop).
The brilliance of the show lies in its signature split format. The first half of the episode follows the NYPD homicide detectives who investigate the crime and apprehend the suspects. The second half shifts to the District Attorney’s office, focusing on the legal maneuvering and courtroom battles required to secure a conviction.
Over its multi-decade run, the series introduced us to legendary, defining TV characters, including Jerry Orbach’s wisecracking Detective Lennie Briscoe and Sam Waterston’s fiercely principled D.A. Jack McCoy. It’s the ultimate comfort binge, offering neatly wrapped (and often “ripped from the headlines”) cases in every single episode.

Which Seasons Are on Netflix (and What’s Coming Next)?
If you were hoping to binge the entirety of the show’s massive catalog today, you might be slightly disappointed to see only the recent revival seasons (21 and 22) available. Of course, we’re taking the L here, given that we had successfully found official title artwork housed within Netflix that specifically corresponds to classic eras like Season 8 and Season 19, but alas, those weren’t part of the drop.
However, there is great news: more seasons are officially coming to Netflix on May 18th, 2026.
It is common for longer-running licensed shows that Netflix picks up to arrive as selective batches rather than the complete catalog. That’s already the case for Law & Order elsewhere. With Peacock, despite being NBCUniversal’s in-house platform, it only hosts a much smaller 9-season selection of the flagship show. Hulu remains the best place to stream the classic eras, as the platform currently holds the complete 20-season original run.
Still, with more seasons landing on May 18th, it’s shaping up to be a massive competitive win for Netflix’s licensed library.
